Just like walking on the moon, spending a week with someone who has is a once in a life time chance. Needless to say this project was a stand out for me. I was both a writer and director on the job which is always fun. I did massive amounts of research on the Apollo missions. Even to the point of liaising with NASA's representative just so I could apply the right links between NASA tech and Mitsubishi tech when writing the 15 second spots.
The shoot was a 3 day affair in an old coal mine I chose to serve as a moonscape. And Charles M. Duke was a pleasure to spend time with. Surprisingly at 72 years, he was still his flying weight.
Mistubishi was in a spot of bother at the time. Closing down manufacturing plants and massive redundancies. So when this campaign launched and Pajero ended up outselling Toyota Landcruiser for a whole quarter, the client was... wait no, I'm not going to say it.
